Painting The Canadian Wilderness
The Canadian wilderness contains some of the most vast and untouched landscapes in North America. From deep forests and winding rivers to open valleys and distant mountains, these environments create a powerful sense of quiet and space. After more than fifty years exploring the landscapes of Western Canada, many of my paintings are inspired by memories of these remote places. Travelling through forests, along rivers, and across northern landscapes provides endless opportunities to observe how light, atmosphere, and colour change throughout the day.
In wilderness areas the landscape often feels undisturbed and timeless. The absence of roads and development allows nature to dominate the scene, creating moments of calm that are difficult to find elsewhere.
When painting these environments I try to capture not only the appearance of the landscape, but also the experience of being there — the quiet sound of moving water, light filtering through trees, and the vastness of the Canadian wilderness stretching beyond the horizon.
Through my work I hope to share the beauty and atmosphere of these landscapes and the inspiration they provide.

Rocky Mountain Landscape Paintings Inspired by the Mountains of Western Canada
The Rocky Mountains of Western Canada are among the most dramatic landscapes in North America. Towering peaks, alpine lakes, and deep forest valleys create scenes that feel both powerful and timeless. For many years I have explored these mountain environments, often returning to the same areas in different seasons to see how light, weather, and atmosphere transform the landscape. Mountains are constantly changing. Morning light can reveal crisp detail along the ridges, while evening light softens the peaks into glowing silhouettes. Clouds drift across the slopes, casting shadows that slowly move across the valleys below. These shifting conditions make the Rocky Mountains an endlessly fascinating subject to paint. When painting mountain landscapes, I’m particularly interested in the sense of scale and depth that these places create. A successful mountain painting often depends on balancing several elements:
Boreal Forest Landscape Paintings The Quiet Forests of Northern Canada The boreal forest stretches across much of Canada, forming one of the largest wilderness regions on Earth. These forests are defined by spruce, pine, and aspen trees, along with countless lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Unlike the dramatic peaks of the mountains, the beauty of the boreal forest is often quiet and subtle. Soft light filters through dense stands of trees. Reflections appear on still water. Wildlife moves silently through the forest. These peaceful moments often become the inspiration for my landscape paintings. The boreal forest presents a unique challenge for a painter. The landscapes may appear simple at first glance, but they contain complex layers of colour and atmosphere. When painting these forests I focus on:
